I friggin' love me some tire stencil paint dealo. The only problem is, is that they are only really for race cars(you know with actual sponsors) , on a street car it just looks kind of ricey, to me atleast.

Big ass wings. Seriously, if you have an AWD/RWD car and you slap a big wing on it (that's not an ebay cheapo wing, but rather something that has quality), then I love it. I'm really thinking about buying one of these guys wings to stick on my ralliart.

How big can they b - HOLY SHIT!! Those things are huge. I say you do it, they look comically large. I am not a wing man myself unless they are needed, like downforce for less oversteer.

Haha, I had friends with wings about that size on Civics and Eclipses back in high school. Good memories.

Things I cannot deal with:
Stance (obligatory yo)
Slammed
Stickers (Especially the JDM or Two in the Pink ones. A) we can all see how Japanese your car is without the sticker, and we'll appreciate it just as much. And b) who would see that sticker and think, "Well that seems like a good idea, I'll have one of those)
Fartcan exhaust. I'm a bit looser on this, because I can see how some people may think it looks/sounds good on their car, it's more my personal opinion. I guess I'd say I hate it when they've clearly removed a resonator, so it just sounds like angry bees instead of sweet sweet exhaust
The backwards flat-brimmed hat that the stereotypical driver wears.
RHD conversions-why does that make sense?
Things I do like-
Louder exhaust
Good paint
Those tiny mirrors a lot of the true JDM cars had overseas
JDM swaps (putting on rims, engines, seats from overseas cars)
Removal of bumpers (No car looks nice with American bumper configurations. Just ask Porsche and BMW)
Rims. Such as Enkei, OZ, Volk, etc etc. A lot of the Japanese wheels look fantastic on those cars.
And that is my ideal non-rice JDM car

Front splitters.
External Oil Coolers
Fender Flares.
![]() 09/02/2013 at 00:07 |

Aftermarket rims that flow with a cars style, front spoilers, understated stickers that flow with the car, gold rims (only on a black, white, gray, or Subaru blue cars)

Everything about this I agree with. Except I used too own a fart can, even though they were from a reputable company, the exhaust still looked like fart cans. . . still don't like them.
Rims. Rims are always good, as long as they are tasteful. I would add Gram Lights(cheaper version of Volk wheels) to that list they have so many good looking wheels.

You might like this local S2000.

I cannot deal with external oil coolers. They draw your eye away from the entire car, it is like a giant ass pimple.
![]() 09/02/2013 at 00:10 |

I think rims are only rice when you couldn't afford a nice set so you got some 15x7s and slapped them on your car, making them undersized and ugly. Not to mention the quality.

Is OZ actually a Japanese company? As I was writing that I realized I had no idea.
Just looked those up, they do indeed look very nice. Tasteful and classy, on just about any car.

I like them if the're on a car with a stock front end, as a way to keep the engine going when there isn't enough room/airflow to effectively work with your mods. Sort of a stopgap between integrated oil coolers and stock positions (especially so you can put an Intercooler somewhere) but I still sort of like them even when it makes no sense whatsoever to keep them on the outside (like in the case above, where they put a new front end on anyway, and I know they make front ends that can fit those coolers inside) because of that rough style associated with them.
Really, RWB is cool and all, but between you and me, the rough style has been around the 240z for 40 years.
The headlight covers, front aero, weird wheels, fender flares, ducktail spoiler? All factory and stock on the 240ZG and the Z432.

Wikipedia says they are Italian, I don't think people will mind though.
And you damn well better like them, I am planning on getting a set for my car!

Those will look fantastic on a Toyobaru. Is that a weight improvement over stock? It has to be.

Haha, Fender Mirrors are awesome.

Well I am going for an 18x8.5 size wheel, and with the tire they are nearly the same weight(the OEM wheels are + or - 1 pound lighter). Hopefully it won't make the car slower(having a bigger diameter). I don't think it should be noticable.

Probably not, plus dat fit. We all expect pictures upon installation.
Good luck!

If it is needed, I can deal with that, but for style point? That is a no go. I honestly might be missing something with this whole thing but I think if you can get some new front end to fit the oil cooler then you should.
Also I like how they added fender flares to the 240Z, yet it has tiny tires...

I like fender rivets, but I would much rather prefer a smoother approach. Also it is okay that you are awake, I am also wide awake as well!

White wheels...
...and tow hooks.
That's as far as I'll go though
![]() 09/02/2013 at 00:42 |

It was for racing purposes. Stock cars could only be sold with a certain tire size I think (japanese regulations about taxing larger tires, or maybe rubber costs, I dunno) but they'd swap the tires for larger ones for the track.

I don't like hellaflush, but I like minimal fender gap.
I love black wheels.
Big ass front mount intercoolers.
Wiiiiide wheels over stretched or bolt-on fenders.
And those little carbon fiber splitter extensions that are popular on Evo X front splitters.

No stencil paint on the tires? Psh, not ricey in my book ;)
![]() 09/02/2013 at 01:38 |

Well, I consider lots of things "ricey," and it makes me sound pretentious and gets me in trouble. Stems from the frustration of all the spoiled highschool kids around here and their lowered '90s Civic hatchbacks. But I digress, and I haven't even started to answer the question.
French fogs. I consider them ricey because everyone around here keeps them on all the time in a fashion is unsafe, because they blind people. But I like them for when it's foggy and they look cool even when they're off.
JDM swaps. Just don't act like you've got the best car in the world when you do it. I like to identify a JDM swap by noticing details, not a dozen "JDM AS F*CK" stickers on your back window.
Tow hooks. Real ones, bolted into cars that go on the track. They're useful. But you don't really need them for going to the grocery store or McDonalds. And you don't hang a carabiner off the back of your car. That makes me say "Whut???"
And that's pretty much all. Anything else ricey you do to your car will probably mean that we can still be friends, but I wouldn't buy your car. In your particular case, YSI, you haven't done anything that I think is dumb. :)

Outrageous blow off valve sounds. I used to have one that sounded like this.
But then again, I have a huge sense of humor for cars, including my own.

15x7's are perfectly acceptable on a Miata. . . . Its just tire selection that gets you. . . .

Well let me put it like this. A Miata is a tiny car so a small sized wheel will still look good on it. On a 04 Lancer, not so much. Also everyone needs dem fat ass tires. PHAT

I am glad you like what I have done to my car, which isn't much. Don't worry though, it will stay classy!

Great! I'm not sure I've ever seen the tire stencils on a road car before. I do like them, but you're right. They are sort of only for tires that have been given to you by a sponsor...
![]() 09/02/2013 at 02:23 |

Wheels are ugly/not aggressive for my tastes, ride height should be a little lower
(but not hellaflush levels), I don't like yellow, the wing just seems out of place (side flaps, a little on the big side) possibly because its on a convertible.
Personally, if I had an s2000, I'd go like this.

VTEC variable valve timing

Well, around these here parts, your wheel has to stay inside the fender to be road legal, so if you go for some wider rubber, you kinda need the flares, in which case I wouldn't call 'em ricey. :) Though the wider rubber may be ricey, given execution and the actual car in question.
![]() 09/02/2013 at 06:44 |

Spot on. The original 1969 flare design was to make it easy to fit track-sized wheels on the production 240z.

Things I fucking love:
Tire stencils
Bolt-on fenders
JDM decals and badges. If they apply to the car, that is, like for instance putting the JDM GT-FOUR door decal on my Celica:
To some degree other decals/stickers as well, like Jalopnik, Opposite Lock and Speedhunters since I frequent those sites. Club decals if I were to join one (or more) are also cool. Basically, anything that isn't just for show and has a meaning to it is cool in my book.
Front splitters!
Rear diffusers!
Black or bronze wheels (no idea if they're considered ricey, but I just can't even imagine putting anything other than that on my car).
Loud exhausts!
Big or even huge front-mounted intercoolers!
Functional hood scoops and vents!
Actual carbon fiber!
Tow hooks!
Yellow/French foglights and/or headlights!

Kinda depends on my mood. Sometimes I'd prefer a more subtle, smooth approach to a car. Something that I could take to a car show and have people just walk by and stare, and yet would be equally at home driving through the countryside like a classic British roadster.
On the other hand, sometimes I want the full (as I call it) Industrial Domination look. Rivets showing, unneeded bits removed, sits wider and lower with the air about it of "I'm only here to fuck shit up." Maybe engine swap it for something beefy and mean like the atypical LS swap, go with a truly minimalist interior, and a couple racing buckets with full harnesses. I've found that the 240z like pictured so many times is actually very well capable of doing both.

My wife and I love the BOV sounds. I keep threatening her, when she goes on business trips, with a BOV in her Volvo when she returns. But she will be walking by me in our place and she will randomly let out a: Zoootoootoo. BOV's are all about not taking cars too seriously in my opinion.

I prefer flares to be blended into the body of a car rather than just glued/riveted on but the neither of the first two even strike me as rice if they have a purpose. The external oil coolers piss me off. There is no good reason to have a critical engine component outside all the protection of the front end. One good rock kicked up takes out your oil system.
After having a lot of Zs, I almost can't drive an S30 without at least some aero improvements. Even upgraded they basically want to take flight anything over 100 MPH.

Part of the reason Z tires look skinny even with flares is the suspension. They only have about 4.5" of backspace to play with unless changed to coilovers. That means you can only really push the wheel width out from the hub, but nothing like a modern car. A lot of modern cars have a lot of backspace room to play with as well as having the ability to flare out for more. This is generally due to the coilover configuration and angle of suspension components.

My guilty pleasures:
Tire stencils (So cool on the right cars).
Subtle sponsor stickers or stickers tastefully done to the cars color scheme (like above).
Cars a little too low to be practical (but not slammed or stanced).
A seriously growly exhaust (as long as the car is actually fast).

The demands from racers got Nissan to release the Z432 and 240ZG with vastly improved aerodynamics. That's why they (the original ones) were riveted on, it was a clever solution to not having to form new panels from the factory, but still being able to sell factory racers, since the flares were fibreglass and the fenders were metal.
I'm also not sure how strong those coolers are. I always figured they were like a radiator, which if you get a rocked kicked up into it may work a little less, but isn't going to critically go out (maybe a huge rock would, but that same rock would break your windshield too).
But the flares and splitters are rice for people who are just driving these on the street. Over 80-90mph though? Insane difference. I had a splitter and cobra wing on my '98 Mustang, and that thing felt so much more stable at high speeds.
